Client Focus – Relationships Matter

Client Focus is a series that features some of our clients and explains the characteristics of Weatherbys Hamilton that are important to them. Our overriding priority is to establish a relationship of trust with all our clients, regardless of the size of their requirements. Insurance is a necessity of most people’s lives and easy to take for granted until it is called upon. It is then that relationships can really count. By taking the time to understand our clients’ businesses, life styles and priorities we are able to provide the right advice on insurance at the time that it is needed and then support it with the quality of service which makes all the difference. Unrelenting client focus is at the very heart of our ethos.

With a childhood spent on a farm on Dartmoor, Warren was bitten by the racing bug from the beginning. Starting his career by sharing a room with Richard Johnson at David Nicholson’s legendary academy, Warren did his time with various trainers before nine key years as head lad and then assistant to Oliver Sherwood. Three years as a salaried trainer to Malcolm Denmark completed his education and he was ready to take the plunge on his own in 2012 with 15 horses at Uplands in Upper Lambourn, the yard made famous by Fred Winter.

More than 40 winners in each of the last three seasons, from a string of 70 horses and a strike rate of 20%+, has given Warren a brilliant start and Cole Harden’s win in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2015 announced his arrival in the big league in no uncertain terms. However, Warren’s success with Bumper horses, where winners have been in double figures each year at a strike rate of 30%+, gives even more cause for optimism for the seasons ahead, as well as being a considerable testament to the buying skills of his wife Tessa who is an agent with Highflyer Bloodstock.

“There is a lot of pressure in starting off training and the last thing you want to have to worry about is whether the yard is insured correctly or indeed the horses themselves. Every part of my operation needs to work smoothly. I have used Richard Chugg of Weatherbys Hamilton since I started and I have complete confidence in him and his firm. It makes such a difference to use someone who will come out to the yard at the drop of a hat to sort things out, as well as reminding me why I have a much more enjoyable existence as a racehorse trainer than Richard does as an insurance broker! ”

Universally known as Minty, David Minton cut his teeth as a bloodstock agent with the Curragh Bloodstock Agency in Newmarket in the 1970s and established his own agency David Minton Bloodstock in 1985. Reversing the agency in to the British Bloodstock Agency PLC in 1995 when both saw an opportunity to combine forces in the National Hunt world, Minty established Highflyer Bloodstock with Anthony Bromley after corporate raiders caused the break-up of the AIM listed company in 2000.  The roll of top class horses that Highflyer has purchased  is really astonishing; Sprinter Sacre, Kauto Star, Bob’s Worth, Big Bucks, Long Run, Many Clouds are only a few of the recent stars and the tally of 42 winners at the last 7 Cheltenham Festivals, or 23% of the races run, is quite extraordinary.

In addition to working as an agent, Minty has helped his wife Juliet to establish Mill House Stud in Shropshire as one of the leading consignors of NH stock in the country, as well as providing R&R for some legendary performers during the summer. Minty’s love of life is infectious and many of his clients become close friends. Rarely ever forgetting a name, he is as comfortable on the golf course as the racecourse, and there are many in the bloodstock industry who have benefited from his help and advice along the way.

“My friendship and business relationship with Charles Hamilton goes back more than 25 years and Beth Sharkey, one of his partners, started her career making the tea for me even longer ago than that. In my opinion Weatherbys Hamilton is the perfect combination; the best insurance brokers in the business with a family firm that is a byword for integrity and stability. They look after all my own and my wife’s insurances and it is so important to me to be able to recommend them to my clients with confidence, which I emphatically can. The quality of the partners and their staff is what sets them apart and I don’t believe that they have any equals in the private client sector”

Harry Herbert started Highclere Thoroughbred Racing in 1992 and in the last 20 years has established the gold standard for syndicate ownership of racehorses. Grouping like-minded investors together in syndicates of 10 -20 members and being able to send horses to the top trainers, Harry has brought a level of enjoyment and success that would have been unimaginable for most of his shareholders on their own. What makes HTR’s success all the more remarkable is that Harry and John Warren, his brother-in-law, select only about 20 yearlings each year from the 5,000 or so presented at auction in Europe  and do not have the firepower in the sale ring to compete at the very highest level. However, Lake Coniston in 1995 was the first Group 1 winner and he has since been followed by a stream of top class horses; Delilah, Tamarisk, Petrushka, Memory and Harbinger to name a few, with Motivator thrillingly winning the Derby in 2005 for the Royal Ascot Racing Club which Harry also manages. Harry’s talents were further recognised in 2014 when he was appointed racing advisor to Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Al Shaqab Racing’s success with horses such as Treve, Olympic Glory and Toronado has already made him one of the most high profile owners in Europe with increasing participation worldwide.

“Insurance plays a vital part in the HTR operation because we are representing the interests of upwards of 200 shareholders at any one time. If the worst happens it is critical that they are able to recover the cost of some of their investment, or indeed  be able to protect their profit if they are lucky enough to have a good horse. HTR has used Weatherbys Hamilton and its partners for many years and I have complete confidence in everything they do for us. Beth Sharkey provides an impeccable service 24/7 and is always there with the best advice whenever we need it. Any instructions are implemented immediately and if we do have a loss the claim money is in our account almost before we know it. Weatherbys Hamilton plays a key role in enabling HTR to provide the service to its shareholders that it prides itself upon and it is very reassuring to have them on our team.”

Since the 1980s Kirsten Rausing has owned and managed  Lanwades Stud and St Simon Stud, both near Newmarket. as well as Staffordstown Stud in Co Kildare, her Irish nursery. For more than 35 years Miss Rausing has been a beacon of independence in the bloodstock industry and in particular, three of the stallions that she has stood, Niniski, Selkirk and Hernando  have left an important mark on the breed through the success of so many of their progeny. The influence of the “AL” line that emanates from Miss Rausing’s legendary foundation mare Alruccaba runs deep through her broodmare band  and ensures  that their progeny are highly sought after whenever they appear in the sale ring. Lanwades is currently home to an exciting stallion roster with, amongst others, the beautifully bred Archipenko finding great success on the racecourse with his first crop in 2014 and there is much anticipated of Sea The Moon, the brilliant winner of the German Derby  and the first son of the exceptional  Sea The Stars to go to stud.

“Weatherbys Hamilton looks after all my insurances whether it is for me personally, my horses or the stud operations themselves. I have had a business relationship with Jonny McIrvine, the WH partner, for 23 years and both he and the rest of the firm have an instinctive feel for what I need. Horses are not machines and it is very important to me to be represented by a broker who understands what it takes to manage a large breeding operation and who can represent me accordingly with the insurers. To borrow the lines of a well-known prime minister about her industry secretary “ Other people bring me problems, WH brings me solutions!”

Oliver Sherwood trains National Hunt horses at Rhonehurst in Lambourn and is having an excellent season. He has just trained his 1000th winner since taking out his licence in 1984 and Many Clouds was his second winner of the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury last November since Arctic Call won for him and Jamie Osborne in 1990. Many Clouds won again impressively at Cheltenham in January and now goes back for the Gold Cup in March with every chance of adding to Oliver’s six previous Festival winners.

“Any insurance I need is taken care of by Weatherbys Hamilton and Richard Chugg is a great friend as well being the partner that looks after me. When my house caught fire late in the evening a few years ago, Richard arrived on the scene at the same time as the fire engines and masterminded the whole insurance process so efficiently that I now have an infinitely nicer house than before! What I really value is the fact that I can pick up the telephone and everything is just taken care of without any fuss”
